Alex Sundakov is Executive Director at Castalia, a specialist global infrastructure advisory firm. From his base in Sydney, Australia, he provides expert advice on financing of infrastructure projects and the setting up and operation of infrastructure investment funds. He has worked with a wide range of institutional investors, including pension funds and sovereign wealth funds from across Asia and the Pacific, the International Finance Corporation and InfraCo Asia, assisting them in pursuing infrastructure investment opportunities and developing deal pipelines. He managed Castalia’s contribution to due diligence on over US$20 billion worth of infrastructure deals throughout Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, India, Vietnam and the Philippines.
Mr. Sundakov combines thorough understanding of the risk preferences and portfolio strategies of institutional investors with hands-on experience in implementing policy solutions to catalyse private investments and to overcome capital markets bottlenecks. He helped design and set up the Indonesian Infrastructure Guarantee Fund (IIGF), advised on the operation of the Indonesian Infrastructure Investment Fund (SMI) and worked on the establishment of the Philippines Contingent Liability Fund for infrastructure PPPs.
Mr. Sundakov has a strong connection to New Zealand. From 2008 to 2013 he served as a member of the New Zealand National Infrastructure Advisory Board. Prior to joining Castalia in 2003, Mr. Sundakov worked as the Director (CEO) of the New Zealand Institute of Economics Research, New Zealand’s leading economic think tank. Before that, he served on the staff of the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC and worked at the New Zealand Treasury during the 1980s economic reforms. He holds an MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics.
