Lead of Speciality, Microbiology & Molecular Diagnostics


Since starting training as a Medical Laboratory Scientist at Green Lane Hospital in 1982, Murray has seen massive changes in laboratory technology and pathology funding. He has worked in both the public and private sectors, as a Microbiology Scientist at North Shore and Tauranga Hospital’s, then in 1996 securing the position as Supervising Scientist Microbiology at Pathlab. In 1999 he became the Charge Scientist, before taking up his current role in 2012 as Lead of Specialty, Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics. Over the past two decades at Pathlab Murray has overseen the introduction of molecular diagnostic testing, development and implementation of the Delphic Microbiology paperless IT system with Sysmex, the change to MALDI-ToF for organism identification, and most recently the implementation of the BD Kiestra Total Laboratory Automation (TLA) system. During this time he has also been involved in the design, construction, and commissioning, of two purpose built Medical Microbiology and Molecular Laboratories.
