Jim is a coastal earth scientist with over 30 years experience in applied coastal management in both the private and public sectors in a wide range of coastal settings right around New Zealand. He has extensive experience in coastal hazard assessment and management, and has been involved in the development, design and implementation of site-specific hazard management strategies and action, at over 300 sites around the New Zealand coastline, as well as regional and district-wide coastal hazard management strategies and provisions. Jim places emphasis on understanding and working with nature, and with affected landowners and communities to achieve environmentally soft and sustainable solutions and adaptive management strategies. He was also responsible for the initiation of Beachcare/Coastcare community based dune restoration in New Zealand, and has had extensive involvement in design and implementation of coastal restoration and the development of guidelines for this work.
