Programme Leader- Hazards and Risks


Rob has 37 years’ experience in coastal engineering, risk from natural hazards, and the impacts of climate change on coastal communities and infrastructure. Rob is the Programme Leader for NIWA’s Climate, Atmosphere & Hazards Centre, coordinating research and consulting activities associated with weather-related and tsunami hazards and the risks they pose. He has published papers on sea-level rise, tides, RiskScape and coastal hazards (including tsunami). Rob has been the technical lead on several coastal projects including motorway upgrades in Auckland, coastal cycleways, ocean outfalls, dredging in Otago Harbour and the runway extension for Wellington Airport. He is the Lead Author revising the coastal guidance for local government to be published by the Ministry for Environment.
