Christchurch City Council

Robert (or Buster) Wright is a career building official. His introduction to building control came after a brief stint on the tools when he joined Westland County Council in 1984 as a cadet building official. After moving to the UK and being involved building surveying in the commercial construction sector he joined the London Borough of Tower Hamlets Building Control Department 1990, a feature of this time was his involvement on the Canary Wharf Project, at the time the largest building project in Europe. Robert returned to New Zealand in 1996, and in 2000 he landed his "dream job" as Building Control Manager at Timaru District Council. After nine years at the helm, Robert went solo as a building consultant and training provider. He worked with the Building Officials Institute (BOINZ), BRANZ and Building Networks NZ while also providing in-house training for 17 building control departments throughout the country. In December of 2013 Robert joined the Consenting and Compliance Group at Christchurch City Council (CCC), heading the Operational Policy and Quality Improvement Unit where he managed Implementation Process, Training & Assessment, Earthquake Prone Building and the Accreditation portfolios. In early 2017, Robert took up the role of Head of Building Consenting, and is relishing this opportunity to be working back in the operational side of the business. Robert has represented Local Government NZ on the Licensed Building Practitioner Working Party, chaired the South Island IQP Registration Panel for eight years and was an Otago Polytechnic Assessor for the National Diplomas in Building Control Surveying.
