Responsible Care New Zealand is the industry association for chemical suppliers and those wishing to safely manage their workplace chemicals. The not for profit association is one of 63 chemical associations worldwide, providing expert advice to governments and employers, while actively promoting and enabling safe chemical management, through Responsible Care®, the UN acclaimed voluntary industry chemical management initiative. Responsible Care NZ is proactively involved in improving and successfully implementing New Zealand’s world-class, integrated chemical management legislation, participating in international and national Government/industry advisory groups. Popular Association ‘compliance tools’ include technical advice, a 24/7 emergency response service; specialist training for industry, government agencies and emergency responders; enforceable national performance standards Approved Codes of Practice); site compliance assessments and certification, together with public and industry educational initiatives. A familiar figure throughout the international and local Responsible Care® community, Barry is a Board member of the International Council of Chemical Associations. He is leading the delivery of chemical safety awareness and training in emerging economies throughout Asia and Africa.

Professor Barry Borman

Director, of the national Environmental Health Indicators Programme

Massey University

Professor Barry Borman, is Professor of Epidemiology, Massey University. He is also the Director, of the national Environmental Health Indicators Programme (www.ehinz.ac.nz), which includes environmental health indicators, surveillance of hazardous substances, environmental burden of disease and occupational disease surveillance. A critical component of the programme is the provision of data and information for policy development and decision making in the health-related sectors. The programme also provides an environmental health ‘consultancy’ service to government agencies and the health sector. Barry is also the Director the New Zealand Birth Defects Registry which monitors the prevalence of birth defects in the New Zealand. He teaches epidemiology and biostatistics at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as supervising PhD students.

Tania van Maanen

Senior Technical Policy Advisor, Regulation

Environmental Protection Authority

Tania is a senior technical policy advisor in the Regulation Team at the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). She has been with the EPA since 2000, holding a variety of roles including seven years in the Compliance Team. Tania has spent the last three years working on the Health and Safety Reform project, with a primary focus on developing EPA Notices, a new legal instrument to replace many of the HSNO regulations. Throughout her time at the EPA, Tania has gained a comprehensive knowledge of the HSNO framework and legislation, and an appreciation of the broad range of issues relating to the management of hazardous substances in New Zealand. Before joining the EPA, Tania spent a number of years as an environmental chemist specialising in the trace and ultra-trace analysis of organic contaminants.
